Death and Defeat
The likely resolution of every combat is defeat for one side or another.
The Last Hit
- A character is Maimed as soon as they receive their third and last Hit (more if they can take additional Hits from Powers).
- A Maim is a grievous injury that is difficult to heal.
- The Judge makes up an injury that at least yields a penalty card when relevant.
- Exactly like a Flaw, a Maim gives a judge total leverage over a character when relevant, including penalty draws, forcing a draw where one isn't normally needed, and even automatic failure.
- Healing a maim requires rest and is covered here.
- Examples include, broken arm, dislocated knee, shattered jaw, broken ribs, internal bleeding, punctured lung, gutshot, concussion, et cetera.
Trying to Stay Up
- Anytime a character receives a Maim, they must Draw.
- A Penalty Card is drawn for each Maim (including the one just received) along with any other normal Bonus or Penalty Cards.
- On a Red Suit, the character removes 1 Hit and can keep fighting.
- On a Black Suit, the Character is Down for the rest of the scene (likely the end of combat).
- A Downed character is completely helpless. They are either awake and in unbelievable pain or they are completely unconscious. Either way, a Downed character is out of the fight and cannot act other than to gasp for breath and hang on to dear life.
Death is Deliberate
- Any Character in Red Suit cannot die, unless someone EXECUTES them in the Downed state.
- Some extenuating circumstances, of course, apply at the Judge's discretion. Characters are not invincible.
